About

Welcome to Decoding Sexuality: Power, Identity, and the Body

I’m Henry Zhu, a freshman at UNC-Chapel Hill, and I’m excited to share my online journal with you.

From an early age, I began grappling with the complexities of my queer identity—a journey shaped by self-discovery, resilience, and a deep commitment to understanding queer culture and studies. This path hasn’t been without its challenges, from enduring slurs to confronting societal misconceptions that frame identity as a “choice” rather than a deeply felt reality.

Through this journal, I explore critical topics like gender performativity, the deconstruction of gendered dichotomies using post-structuralist theory, queer representation, asexuality’s challenge to social norms, and reproductive justice viewed through an intersectional lens. Writing and managing this platform has been both a creative and intellectual endeavor, with over 700 page views and a consistent flow of articles and op-eds (1–2 per month).

My mission is to dismantle the myth of “essentialized sexuality”—an institutionalized construct targeting the body—and to contribute to a broader understanding of queer identities and experiences. This space is a blend of personal reflections, academic inquiry, and community engagement, all driven by a desire to celebrate and empower queer voices.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. I’m thrilled to share my thoughts, experiences, and evolving perspectives as I continue to delve into queer studies and critical theory.
